Since the conclusion of the Memorandum of Understanding between NRCT and JSPS in 1977, our scientific cooperative program is continuing to be considerably successful. This is indicated by a large number of exchange scientists between the two countries, and by the fact that many Thai scientists have been awarded doctoral degrees from Japanese universities under the RONPAKU program. As of 2003 fiscal year, 407 researchers have obtained their degrees of dissertation Ph.D. through this program, 152 of which being Thai. Thailand still tops the list of graduates, followed by Indonesia (Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture) with 98 graduates.

Under these circumstances, JSPS Bangkok Office hosted the 1st RONPAKU Fellows Meeting in Bangkok on March 14, 2003. As an outcome, 75 RONPAKU Fellows took part in this meeting and the event not only did offer good opportunities for discussion concerning various research fields, owing to the range of participants, but also proved to be an important program. As a continuation, our office held the "2nd JSPS-NRCT RONPAKU Fellows Meeting" in Bangkok on December 17, 2003. During the FY 2000-2002 period, 28 Thai RONPAKU Fellows obtained their Ph.D.s from Japanese universities. Recently JSPS Bangkok Office, in cooperation with NRCT, held the "3rd JSPS-NRCT RONPAKU Fellows Meeting" on February 4 2005. Four of the 6 Thai RONPAKU Fellows who obtained Ph.D.s from Japanese universities during 2003-2004, were presented RONPAKU medals by Ms. Yuko Furukawa, Director of International Program Department, JSPS after congratulatory addresses by her and Prof. Ahnond Bunyaratvej, Secretary-General, NRCT.

This year JSPS Bangkok Office raised a suggestion to found the Association of RONPAKU Alumini (ARA), Thailand. Thai participants in the meeting selected the board of the foundation to discuss the basic agreement of the ARA to be launched. The foundation board nominated Prof. Dr. Busaba Yongsmith, Kasesart University and 5 other alumni from different universities as the board of ARA, Thailand. The party declared the foundation of the Association.
